Oregon?s faux retro jerseys are still more new than old

Oregon?s faux retro jerseys are still more new than old

Oregon is going retro ? kinda.

The Ducks will wear "retro-inspired" jerseys for Thursday's game against California in Autzen Stadium. The new jerseys are a lighter shade of green than the team's usual Nike unis, with a cartoon of the mascot, Puddles, on the shoulders replacing the wings. The words "Fighting Ducks" are scrolled across the front of the jersey and the "2,790" embroidered into the collar represents the number of push-ups Puddles did last year ? one for every point scored by the nation's highest-scoring offense.

If Nike really wanted to make this jersey retro, it should have put the numbers on the shoulders and the fighting duck logo with the "O" on the sleeves. Also, cropping the jerseys so that they exposed the player's stomach would have been a nice touch.

This isn't the first time the Ducks have abandoned their more than 300 different uniform combinations in favor of "retro" jerseys against Cal. In 2009, Oregon turned back the clock with a look that legitimately paid homage to the 1994 Rose Bowl team.

Those jerseys were simple - green and gold - the way Oregon used to be before Nike decided to use the Ducks as a fashion experiment.
