Thursday Night Live Blog: A tree grows in Tucson

Thursday Night Live Blog: A tree grows in Tucson

Look, I'm not going to lie to you people. On one sideline tonight, there's a team that just fired its head coach in the wake of an ugly loss that extended its losing streak against FBS competition to nine games. On the other, there's a team that's probably going to fire its head coach before the year is out, and may go ahead pull the trigger if it can't put away the lame duck outfit across the field. Actual attendance is likely to leave about a quarter of the stadium empty, at least.

And what I'm saying to you is: Now, more than ever, it is time to stand up for Thursday night football as an institution, and rally around it, and bathe in the life-affirming mockery of its inevitable ineptitude. When they ask you, "Where were you when they aired a meaningless game between 3-3 UCLA and 1-5 Arizona?" will you be able to say you stood up in the face of Neuheisel? Now, though the teams may be bad, though the booth may feature Craig James, is the moment to reaffirm to the world: The snark will go on.

? What: Thursday night live blog, UCLA at Arizona. All colors and comments welcome.
? When: Kickoff is 9 pm ET, 7 pm local, on ESPN. Blog kicks simultaneously, give or take a little pregame banter.
? Who: You and all your rowdy friends, and all their Zoloft.
? How: Hit "Watch Now," enter comments into the available box and do your part to accelerate the slow, agonizing death of conventional journalism.
? Why: In memory of Mike Stoops and entertainingly overheated sideline presences everywhere.
