Santonio Holmes calls out the Jets offensive line

Santonio Holmes calls out the Jets offensive lineFrom the outside, the Jets locker room looks like a miserable place right now.

The team is 2-3. There have been rumors that the receivers were complaining about the offensive coordinator, which may or may not have gotten Derrick Mason traded to the Texans. And now another wide receiver, Santonio Holmes, is popping off about the offensive line.

"I may be criticized again for saying it, but it starts up front," Holmes said Thursday. "The big guys know it. If they give Mark enough time to sit in the pocket and complete passes, I think everything changes." [...]

"If you can't protect the quarterback for four or five seconds, there's no point in dropping back seven yards to throw the football if he doesn't have enough time," said Holmes, averaging 13.2 yards per catch. "We pretty much have to roll with the way our offense is rolling right now."

Backwards into Rich Kotite's garage. That's where the Jets offense is rolling right now.

On one hand, Holmes isn't saying anything that's untrue here. The line, in fact, is not protecting Mark Sanchez, and that guy has a hard enough time performing under optimal conditions.

On the other hand, why bring it up? Do you really need more strife in that locker room? Is finger-pointing the best solution for getting the Jets offense back on track? Why not just say that everyone needs to do a better job, yourself included, and call it a day? As a fan, I love the honesty, but I'd imagine his teammates would rather he kept his complaints in house.

I wonder if this is a situation where having such an outspoken head coach works against a team. It's not that I think Rex Ryan's style doesn't work or that he's a bad coach -- I don't think that at all. But he is aggressively outspoken, and I wonder if sometimes, his players don't take their cues from him.
