Jacob Pullen -- like most everyone else -- doesn't much care for the NIT. So much so, in fact, that he claims that he will flat refuse to play if Kansas State doesn't qualify for the NCAA Tournament."This is my last go around," Pullen told the Kansas City Star. "I'm not going to the NIT. I won't play basketball in the NIT. I'm saying that now. If we lose, and we have to go to the NIT, I will not play."
Now, let's all relax a bit. First of all, even if K-State goes to the NIT, my money is on Pullen playing. And, more importantly, the situation is not yet that dire. The Wildcats are 12-5, though their conference start certainly could have been better. Consecutive losses at Oklahoma State and at home to Colorado are a cause for concern. And lest Pullen forget that he has not been a model of consistency himself. A preseason All-American, he's not lived up to the billing so far, scoring only four points in a loss to Duke and missing three games due to a suspension -- one of which was a loss to UNLV.
Still, no reason to panic. As Pullen points out, there are 14 more conference games, more than enough time to erase what's occurred in the last week.
And, admit it, at least a small part of you -- if not your entire being -- wants to see K-State miss the tournament so Pullen is forced to put his money where his mouth is.
