Hey, is that a chihuahua in Carlos Gonzalez's lap or is he just happy to be one of the sports stars replacing Tiger Woods in Gillette's bid to sell more shaving products?
It's both, actually, as the Colorado Rockies outfielder — who might be getting a big contract extension any day — has been tabbed as one of Gillette's "Young Guns" for an upcoming national ad campaign. As you might have heard, the company ditched Woods late last month and is now turning toward guys like Gonzalez, Evan Longoria, Matt Ryan, Ray Rice, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch to transform its marketing efforts. Says the press release:
The program highlights up-and-coming stars and gives fans an in-depth look into the keys to their success both on and off the field.
The video spots remind me a little of those Dove ads featuring more elder statesmen like Andy Pettitte and Albert Pujols. It's obviously a huge step for Gonzalez. Though his commercial compatriots have a few more successful seasons under their belts, Gonzalez is being recognized immediately after his breakout 2010, a performance that featured a third-place finish in the NL MVP race in only his first full season.
With his outstanding talent, great smile and ability to appeal toward the young, male Hispanic demographic, it really was only a matter of time until Gonzalez was approached for a high-profile ad. As you can tell in the embed below, he does a pretty good job, too:
