Talk about a terrible shock. It was only last Friday when Bob Forsch took the mound at Busch Stadium and threw out the first pitch before Game 7 of the World Series.
One week later and the former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher is dead at age 61 from an apparent heart attack.�St. Louis Post-Dispatch writer Rick Hummel reports Forsch collapsed and died suddenly from "an aneurysm in his upper chest" at his Florida home on Thursday night.
A tall right-hander, Forsch pitched in St. Louis for all but one of his 16 seasons. He was a member of the 1982 World Series title team and made two other trips with the 1985 and 1987 squads. He won 20 games in 1977, threw two no-hitters ? one in 1978 and one in 1983 ? and finished with 168 wins and a 3.76 career ERA. He's the only Cardinals pitcher who threw multiple no-hitters with the team and ranks third on the franchise's all-time wins list behind Bob Gibson and Jesse Haines.
Not bad for someone who didn't rack up many strikeouts (1,133 Ks in 2,794 innings).
Forsch was a regular contributor to Cardinals Care and a familiar sight around the team's alumni events. His brother, Ken, pitched 16 seasons for the Astros and Angels.
After the championship high of the last week, this comes as very sobering news for Cardinals Nation. Our condolences go out to the Forsch family.
