Distraction time! A sortable database of every Derek Jeter hit

With Posada Gate somehow still raging and Yankees brass temporarily seething at Derek Jeter for his comments about the controversy, it's probably time for New York Yankees fans to get a distraction from all the distractions of this current five-game losing streak.

Luckily, the fine folks at Newsday have taken a break from putting all of their good baseball content behind a paywall to build something sure to remind every Yankees fan of the good old days.

Yes, Newsday.com is now featuring a very nifty database comprised of each of Jeter's 2,965 and counting career hits. The newspaper plans to update the database daily as The Captain moves toward becoming the first Yankee to reach 3,000 in pinstripes.

In truth, it's not a complete revelation ? Baseball-Reference's Play-Index can do the same things this database can and is more powerful ? but its ease of use isunparalleled and it's completely free.

So go ahead. Want to know which pitcher Derek Jeter has the most hits against (Tim Wakefield)? How many came at Wrigley Field (two)? The exact details of hit No. 1,349 (A single off Ryan Franklin at Seattle's Safeco Field in the fourth inning of a game on Aug. 17, 2002)? Punch it all in and see what comes up.

It's a toy so cool we're almost willing to forgive the paper taking Ken Davidoff's columns and blog entries away from us. Almost.
