The Shutdown Corner Podcast – 5/17: Mike Silver, Adam Froman, David Mims

In the wake of the latest labor news, we thought it might be time to do an expanded, multi-guest version of the Shutdown Corner Podcast, and we've lined up three interesting folks for your edification.

First, we have Mike Silver, the longtime Yahoo! Sports NFL guy, noted rock-and-roll journalist, and inveterate Cal softball fan. Mike was good enough to stay in one place for half an hour and give his take on the Eighth Circuit Court ruling, the ongoing game of chicken between the owners and players, and how he thinks the debacle may end. And anytime you can get a Rolling Stones "Turd On the Run" reference from "Exile on Main Street"… well, that's just a bonus. Mike's article archive can be found here, and you should definitely be following him on Twitter as well.

Our final guests are two of the truly under-represented in this entire labor fight ? undrafted free agents Adam Froman and David Mims. Froman, a quarterback from Louisville, spent his first two post-high school years at Santa Rosa Community College in California before getting his big shot. He didn't disappoint, winning the starting quarterback job in 2009 and looking good early in the 2010 season before a leg injury derailed the end of his season, his chance at a bowl game, and a likely chance at a late-round draft pick. Froman is back to optimal health again and working out in Louisville, waiting for the lockout to end so that the NFL teams interested in him can finally bring him in. To me, Froman has the potential to start in the NFL if he gets in the right system ? he looks to me to be an embryonic Kevin Kolb/Jake Locker hybrid. Take a look at about 15 minutes of his game tape and see what you think.

Finally, we have David Mims, a really big guy from a very small school. Mims was offered a full scholarship to one college ? Virginia Union, and he's spent his collegiate career dominating the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association players he's supposed to dominate with his size (6-foot-8, 330 pounds) and raw skill set. He started every game at left tackle for four years, and projects well as a right tackle project at the next level. Like Froman, Mims has had some NFL interest, but he must wait for the lockout to end. In the meantime, he's been doing some technique work with Hall of Famer Anthony Munoz.

Enjoy, and thanks for listening!
