Little help here? Billingsley joins list of pitchers to lose 1-hit game

Los Angeles Dodgers pitchers Chad Billingsley and Kenley Jansen did their part in Saturday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The rest of the team? Not so much.

Despite the two hurlers combining for nine innings of one-hit ball, the Dodgers still dropped a 1-0 decision to the D'Backs at Dodger Stadium. According to the AP, it's the first time since a 1914 game against the Chicago Cubs that the Dodgers have lost a game despite only giving up one hit to the opposition.

And despite what the 2010 San Francisco Giants might have you believe ? they lost two one-hit games en route to last year's World Series title ? giving up one hit and losing the game anyway is an extremely rare event. The Play Index at Baseball Reference only lists 44 such instances since 1919.

Billingsley was brilliant in his hard-luck loss, pitching eight innings and going on a streak that saw him sit 16 straight Arizona batters down without a ball leaving the infield.

But it was Stephen Drew's leadoff double that spelled the Dodgers' demise. Drew advanced to third when Billingsley attempted to pick him off at second and the ball instead sailed into center field as shortstop Jamey Carroll didn't cover the bag. ("My fault," Caroll later said.) Drew would then come home to score on Melvin Mora's sacrifice fly, giving Arizona pitching ? which was also great, giving up only four hits behind rookie starter Josh Collmenter ? all the support it would need.

A few more notes about the Dodgers and one-hit defeats:

? Saturday's game was only the 12th time since 1919 the hard-luck pitchers have thrown nine or more innings. The most famous instance of this phenomenon, of course, is when Pittsburgh's Harvey Haddix threw 12 no-hit innings against the Milwaukee Braves on May 26, 1959 and lost the game 1-0 in the 13th.

? Somewhat surprisingly, the Dodgers' loss is only the 14th since 1919 to feature an unearned run. You'd think that number might be a little higher, though homers, walks and stolen bases can be just as dangerous in these types of games.

? Billingsley's eight strikeouts and Jansen's two combined for the second-highest strikeout total in a one-hit loss. (The high is 11, a record shared by three other teams.)

? Can Billingsley get a little help here? The right-hander�has pitched seven or more innings in four of his last nine starts, but only has an 0-2 record to show for it.
