Currently, the NBA and its players are at war over what will turn out to be billions of dollars of revenue. And that's a nice position to be in, to decide what percentage of that cash that you'll see. But with the former presidents and founding fathers set in stone as they grace American currency, none of these players will see a bill with their face on it.
Unless they're Luol Deng, and they're somewhere in England, clutching a fiver.
Brixton, England, is celebrating the accomplishments of the Sudan-born and Great Britain-raised Chicago Bulls forward by putting his face on a five-pound note, something called "complementary currency." Think of it as when soda companies put a picture of Santa Claus on their cans around Christmas.
Here's Deng's reaction, from Business Insider via MSN via Blogabull via SB Dan Devine:
"I am honored to be featured on the new Brixton Pound notes," said Deng on his foundation's website. "I grew up as a young teenager player basketball for the Brixton Topcats which marked the beginning of my career. So it is with great pleasure that I am helping to support the local community that played a vital part in getting where I am today."
Also included in the new notes are Lenford Kwesi Garrison, WWII secret agent Violette Szabo. And David Bowie, dressed as his Aladdin Sane character. And as the weird kid who (seriously) went as Aladdin Sane on Halloween years ago, let's just say I'm a big fan of what Brixton has done here.
