A week and a half after Louisiana Tech running back Tyronne Duplessis suddenly passed away, his family confirmed that the 21-year-old suffered a heart attack that led to his untimely passing.
In a release by Louisiana Tech, Duplessis' father, George Duplessis Jr., detailed the night of Duplessis' passing.
According to his father, George Duplessis, Jr., Tyrone completed a workout on Feb. 1 before returning to his off-campus apartment in Ruston. He spent the evening at dinner with his fiance.
Early the next morning, Tyrone awake in distress, springing to a seated position in bed, pounded himself in the chest and fell backward, never to rise again. After 911 was called, emergency responders arrived at the scene, tried to revive the 21-year old and transported him to the hospital before 5 a.m. He was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Duplessis missed the entire 2010 season after suffering a knee injury and struggled with his rehab to make an impact in 2011. He carried the ball just seven times last year. As a true freshman in 2009, Duplessis had 355 yards in nine games.
"It's a tragedy and something that was very unexpected," Louisiana Tech coach Sonny Dykes told the media. "It's difficult on a lot of people, especially his family. He's close to many people on the team and has competed with a lot of our players going back to youth football. We told some of those stories about that last night and reminiscing. Tyronne had an infectious personality and made a lot of people smile. He made a lasting impression and impacted a lot of people."
George Duplessis Jr., told the New Orleans Times-Picayune that his son had soft tissue on his heart, which led to the heart attack.
"(God) loaned him to me for 21 years," George Duplessis Jr., said. "You can't question the Lord.
"They must have had a (football) game going on in heaven," he added, with a slight laugh. "Walter Payton must've gotten tired."
