It was our pleasure this week to speak to former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons running back Warrick Dunn, one of the better guys you'll ever talk to. The total one-off out of Florida State (think of the next 180-pound back who will gain over 10,000 yards in the NFL) first made tracks in Tampa Bay, before moving to Atlanta in 2002 and eventually becoming a key part of the Falcons' backfield of Dunn, Michael Vick, and T.J. Duckett that led the NFL in rushing every year from 2004 through 2006.
Through and after his NFL career, Dunn has been known just as much for his philanthropy as his on-field exploits. He's got a cause very close to his heart that will show up before Sunday night's New York Giants-Dallas Cowboys game at Cowboys Stadium. Dunn, along with country music star Rodney Atkins, will be hosting a care package stuffing event and free concert as part of the Crown Royal Heroes Project?an ongoing commitment to honor, recognize and give back to America's finest ? including police officers, fire fighters, and military personnel.
Dunn is helping spread the word about the program in honor of his mother, a former police officer who was killed during an off-duty security shift when he was growing up.In the podcast with Shutdown Corner, Dunn talks about his mother, how he was moved to start his own foundation to help families looking to own their own homes, his early days in Tampa Bay, what it was like moving from the Vick to Petrino eras in Atlanta, what he thinks of today's read-option superstar (yeah, that Tebow guy) and everything he's been doing since he retired from the game after the 2008 season. It's a good listen, so check it out.
