-- Two teams are dealing with long-term contracts given to one-time potential franchise quarterbacks that they probably now regret. Kansas City Chiefs interim head coach Romeo Crennel thinks that recent acquisition Kyle Orton should be the team's starter in 2012 if he continues to play as he did in the Chiefs' upset win over the Green Bay Packers. Since Crennel might have a shot at a more permanent head coaching gig if that happens, we start to wonder about quarterback Matt Cassel, who signed a six-year, $63 million contract in 2009, has never played exceptionally well, and is currently on injured reserve. -- Similarly, the Arizona Cardinals must be wondering what the heck they were thinking when they gave Kevin Kolb a six-year, $65 million contract before the 2011 season. While Kolb has dealt with various injury issues, including current "concussion-like symptoms" (our favorite NFL buzzphrase!), unheralded backup John Skelton has been making fourth-quarter magic in a Tebow-y fashion. The Cards are 5-1 in games with Skelton as their main man (4-1 in his starts), which Kolb has been underwhelming at best. This is why, as much as teams need franchise quarterbacks, the bridge QB is a very good idea until the right player comes along. [Arizona Republic]
-- Vikings tight end Visanthe Shiancoe believes that some of his teammates turned out the lights a bit early in the team's 42-20 loss to the New Orleans Saints. Specifically, Shiancoe said that some of his teammates "hung it up early." Yeouch. [ESPN Twin Cities]
-- Because there is no New York football without someone mouthing off every single day, Rex Ryan now says that his Jets are better than the Giants team they will face this weekend.
