He gone: Joe Mauer is engaged after proposing to girlfriend

He gone: Joe Mauer is engaged after proposing to girlfriendIt's a sad day for ladies in the land o' lakes.

Minnesota's most eligible bachelor is no longer.

It's true. Joe Mauer officially made himself a taken Twin over the weekend, proposing to his girlfriend Maddie Bisanz while the couple was in Sanibel, Fla. The two have known each other since high school as both are alums of Cretin-Durham High School in St. Paul.

The news was first broken by our Twitter pal Lindsay Guentzel on Sunday before quickly filtering through the rest of Minnesota media, where Mauer is more or less considered Prince William.

Translation: While fellow Twin Cities native Kris Humphries had to make the worst mistake of his life to make headlines with his nuptials, Mauer's engagement was going to be front-page news regardless of the lovely woman on the other side of the ring. (No offense to Maddie, of course.)

From the Pioneer Press:

"[It's] a place that is special to both of us," Mauer said Sunday from Florida. "We couldn't be happier, and we're both really excited."

No wedding date has been set. The couple have been friends for about seven years and have been dating for about 1-1/2 years.

"I was hoping for a yes, and she said yes," Mauer said when he proposed. "I'm getting to marry my best friend."

The 28-year-old catcher credits Maddie for helping him deal with his disappointing 2011 campaign, which saw him play only 82 games while dealing with a litany of medical issues. But lest Twins fans start being concerned that she's some sort of Yoko Ono and that the .729 OPS is here to stay, Mauer also told the Pioneer Press that we "were really close in '09, too."

That, of course, would be Mauer's MVP season.

Anyway, here's wishing the happy couple the best. May they soon be blessed with an actual set of twins, just like Michael Cuddyer and his wife were last week.

UPDATE: Here's a picture of Maddie. She's the one on the left.
