Right-hander Jesse Crain has been a positive addition to the Chicago White Sox bullpen this year, accumulating a 2.38 ERA and a career-high 8.51 K/9 rate over 45.1 innings.
But if we're telling the truth, Crain has also been lucky in his first year on the South Side. His FIP is a full run higher than his ERA at 3.38 and his BABIP measures at a very low .218.Plus, if you want some anecdotal evidence that everything has been coming up Crain, check out the crazy play that happened during Monday's 6-3 win over the Detroit Tigers.
In the top of the seventh, with two runners on and two outs in a two-run game, Crain threw a pitch in the dirt to batter Ryan Raburn. The ball bounced far enough off catcher A.J. Pierzynski that Crain was able to collect it and throw a surprised Carlos Guillen out at second to end the inning. Just your normal 2-1-4 caught stealing, really.
In actuality, the play was anything but routine. Had Pierzynski not been able to deflect the ball or Crain not been able to make a great play, the Sox could have been in big trouble. Crain had surrendered a homer to Miguel Cabrera earlier in the inning and then later issued back-t0-back walks to Jhonny Peralta and Guillen.
But when you're hot, you're hot.
Even A.J. knows it.
