The Philadelphia Phillies announced they have rescheduled Sunday's game against Florida into a day-night doubleheader on Saturday, meaning the Fish will have played three doubleheaders in six days by the end of next Monday.
If the weather predictions hold, of course.
That's a lot of Marlins baseball.
The Marlins split an impromptu doubleheader against the Reds at home on Wednesday in anticipation of Irene-related weather slamming into South Florida. (And they didn't get the biggest crowd at Sun Life Stadium, either.)
The Fish already had been scheduled to play two against the New York Mets in Flushing, N.Y., on Monday due to a makeup game from a rainout earlier this month.
Irene could be a Category 2 hurricane by the time it reaches Camden Yards, where the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles begin play Friday, and already have a doubleheader scheduled Saturday as part of a five-game series. Also starting Friday, the Boston Red Sox host the Oakland Athletics at Fenway Park. And before the Marlins hit New York, the Mets host the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field starting Friday night.
Maybe.
Something else to consider as we enter the final month of the regular season: Rescheduling postponed games will become tougher as the playoffs approach and Major League Baseball runs low on available dates. The last scheduled day of the regular season is Sept. 28.
The playoffs, which were moved forward this season so we're not playing World Series games in November, are scheduled to start Sept. 30.
