While everyone eagerly awaits a resolution to the NFL's labor mess, the NFL Players Association has released a statement saying that there will be no news from its side for a specific reason. From NFLPA president Kevin Mawae:
Player leadership is discussing the most recent written proposal with the NFL, which includes a settlement agreement, deal terms and the right process for addressing recertification. There will not be any further NFLPA statements today out of respect for the Kraft family while they mourn the loss of Myra Kraft.
The Friday morning memorial service for Mrs. Kraft, the wife of New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, saw an enormous turnout from both sides of the ongoing dispute. Mrs. Kraft lost a long battle with cancerWednesday at the age of 68.
Most of the owners' contingent, along with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, flew up to Boston from the owners meetings in Atlanta to attend, as did NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith from the NFLPA's offices in Washington.
In addition, many Patriots players and coaches, both past and present, were on hand. Bill Belichick, Tom Brady, Drew Bledsoe, Jerod Mayo, Wes Welker, Dan Koppen, Patrick Chung, Sebastian Vollmer and ex-Pats Ty Law and Rodney Harrison were on hand, according to the Boston Globe.
There will most likely be further discussions regarding the proposal ratified by the owners Thursday and initially rejected on principle by the players, but a vote would be a stretch with everything else going on Friday. In the grand scheme of things, it was nice for the NFLPA to back off, respect the legacy of a woman who obviously touched the lives of many players, and understand that there are more important things to be said and done.
