Shaun Ellis made Rex Ryan angry by signing with New England

Shaun Ellis spurned a contract offer from the New York Jets and signed with the rival New England Patriots, a decision which Jets coach Rex Ryan seems to equate with the high treason of Benedict Arnold or running away with your best friend's wife.

"The fact that he chose them," Ryan said of Ellis' departure, "there's no way I'm going to wish him well. There's no chance of that."

New York offered Ellis a one-year deal for an unspecified amount. He ended up signing a larger contract with New England that could be worth as much as $5 million this year depending on incentives.

Ellis was drafted by the Jets in 2000 and has spent his entire career with the team. He had 72 sacks for Gang Green and was a two-time Pro Bowler. Even with all that, if he gets a better offer from New England, why wouldn't he jump at the deal? It's not like he owes New York a hometown discount anymore than the Jets owed him extra money for 11 years of loyal service.

Ryan is one to talk about football spurning! He went to school at Southwestern Oklahoma State and then turned around and worked as a graduate assistant on the football team at Eastern Kentucky. For the purpose of this exercise, that's like a Blood joining the Crips!

There's no need to go all Stevie Williams on departing players, Rex. Wait until they say they like Bill Belichick better before taking shots at them.

Thanks, PFT
