Vandalism of Ernie Harwell statue a clear case of blurry behavior

Talk about your weak sauce: At some point this season, someone pried the glasses off the bronze statue of Ernie Harwell that stands outside the gates at Detroit's Comerica Park.

Don't believe someone would stoop that low? Here's a picture of the statue when it was first unveiled in 2002, coupled with one taken by the Detroit News.

Police aren't sure why anyone would vandalize the statue of the longtime voice of the Detroit Tigers, who passed away in 2010 after 42 seasons with the team. They're even less sure how or when the crime took place, though tools like a crowbar or pliers were probably employed in the difficult and dastardly deed.

From Neal Rubin of the Detroit News:

Exactly when this thing happened is unclear. The Tigers noticed in July and notified [Omri] Amrany, 57, [of the Fine Art Studio] who once had to replace bronze broadcaster Harry Caray's stolen microphone in Chicago.

The good news is that Harwell's replacement glasses are currently being cast at the Alchemist Foundry in Kalamazoo and are expected to be melded onto the statue with super force sometime this week. That means the fix should happen in plenty of time for the bronze Harwell to watch the newly crowned AL Central champions host their first playoff game since the 2006 World Series.

As Rubin writes: "He'd want to see this."
