Botched PAT call hands Toledo yet another close loss (Updated)

Syracuse 33, Toledo 30 (Overtime).

Toledo just can't catch a break.

For the second time in as many games against "Big Six" BCS conference foes, the Rockets came up short of an upset. However, against Syracuse on Saturday, the Rockets appeared to have the game taken from them by the officials.

With about two minutes remaining in the game, Syracuse scored the game-winning touchdown, but then the extra point became a source of controversy. Kicker Ross Krautman appeared to push the extra point left past the outside of the upright. Even the video showed the ball crossing in front of the upright.

Still, after video replay, the officials confirmed the kick as good, putting 'Cuse up 30-27 with 2:22 to play.

This wouldn't have been such a big deal had the extra point not given the Orange a three-point lead. Toledo responded by hitting a field goal to tie with three seconds remaining, sending the game to overtime ? where Syracuse finally won ? but that kick should have given the Rockets a one-point victory.

Two weeks ago, Toledo nearly upset Ohio State, but failed to complete a pass on fourth down from the Buckeyes 16-yard line with 48 seconds remaining and lost 27-22.

UPDATE, 8:47 p.m. ET] The Big East has issued an official statement acknowledging that "the ruling on the field that the kick passed between the uprights was incorrect, and that the replay official made an error in failing to reverse that ruling."
