D12: Runs are a special time for Trever Miller and his daughter

Duk's Dozen is a selection of 12 morning-fresh links and items that will start your baseball news day off right. Got links? Send 'em here or via Twitter.

1. As the parent of a special needs child, St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Trever Miller was once faced with the challenge of finding outlets to bond with his six-year-old daughter Grace — who was born with a rare chromosomal disorder and cannot walk or talk — and easing the unique stresses that come with caring for her.

In this month's issue of Runner's World, Miller talks about how he found the one activity that could solve both problems. The 37-year-old pitcher has become a marathon runner over the past few years and his favorite training sessions come when he puts Grace in her stroller and pushes her along the way.

In addition to tucking a diaper bag in the bottom of the stroller, Miller always packs two 15-pound oxygen tanks, a suction machine, and a device that monitors her blood-oxygen level. The stroller weighs 100 pounds once Grace is strapped in.

"It can be tough to get it started, and making turns isn't easy," Miller says. Still, those runs, usually taken around their Land 'o' Lakes, Florida, neighborhood, are among his favorites. "Running together is our moment," Miller says.

The story of Miller's relationship with Grace reminds me a bit of Dick and Rick Hoyt, the father and son triathlete team that was profiled on HBO Real Sports. Trever and Grace's runs are a special time for them and an ultimately inspiring tale for us. Go on over and read their story. Runner's World

2. The Chicago White Sox became the fourth team to roll the dice on Lastings Milledge on Thursday night, but Jim Margalus isn't holding out any hope that Milledge will finally figure it all out on a minor league deal.

"I wouldn't count on Milledge capitalizing on some unrealized potential," Jim writes. "But this signing is a good depth move that will force others to maintain or raise their games." South Side Sox
