As the parent of a special needs child, St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Trever Miller was once faced with the challenge of finding outlets to bond with his six-year-old daughter Grace — who was born with a rare chromosomal disorder and cannot walk or talk — and easing the unique stresses that come with caring for her.
In this month's issue of Runner's World, Miller talks about how he found the one activity that could solve both problems. The 37-year-old pitcher has become a marathon runner over the past few years and his favorite training sessions come when he puts Grace in her stroller and pushes her along the way.
In addition to tucking a diaper bag in the bottom of the stroller, Miller always packs two 15-pound oxygen tanks, a suction machine, and a device that monitors her blood-oxygen level. The stroller weighs 100 pounds once Grace is strapped in.
"It can be tough to get it started, and making turns isn't easy," Miller says. Still, those runs, usually taken around their Land 'o' Lakes, Florida, neighborhood, are among his favorites. "Running together is our moment," Miller says.
