From the Russian Kontinental Hockey League comes an extraordinary hockey fight. Not in the sense that it's good, because it's quite terrible and possibly the worst scrap in recent memory. But it's anything but ordinary.
Please clear out 18 seconds from your day to witness weak punches degenerating into slap fighting in a brawl for which one combatant couldn't even be bothered to remove his visor.
According to Slava Malamud of Sports-Express, fighting in the white sweater and wearing his visor is Dmitry Ryabykin from Avangard Omsk, a 35-year-old defenseman from Moscow who was drafted by the Calgary Flames No. 45 overall in 1994 and never played a game in the NHL. (Taken six spots behind him? Patrik Elias, still playing with the New Jersey Devils.)
Fighting in the blue sweater is Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk forward Evgeny Lapenkov, 27, who has split time between Spartak Moscow and Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk (what a word score in Scrabble this team is) for the last three seasons.
There's only one fight in the last decade that's keeping this snoozefest from being the worst hockey fight of all-time: Aaron Downey (Montreal Canadiens) vs. Brad Norton (Ottawa Senators) from 2006, a.k.a. the fight you can't un-see:
Can we give the KHL fight the nod by virtue of actually having some semblance of fighting rather than a staring contest?
