Let's face it: As long as he remains a 6-foot-2 All-American who runs like a dreadlocked gazelle, there is almost nothing outgoing Alabama cornerback Dr Kirkpatrick could realistically do between now and April 26 to undermine his status as "Likely Top-10 Draft Pick/Future Multimillionaire," up to and including a minor marijuana charge. Still, it probably wasn't a very good idea to push it by actually getting arrested on a minor marijuana charge.
According to the Manatee County (Fla.) Sheriff's Office, Kirkpatrick was in the driver's seat of a truck driven by a former Alabama teammate, Chris Rogers, which was pulled over driving on the wrong side of the road. Both were booked just after midnight Tuesday morning for possession of less than 20 grams of cannabis, a misdemeanor that carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison and/or a $1,000 fine. (Since the link above seems to redirect to a generic search page, here's a screenshot of Kirkpatrick's booking record, including mugshot.) Both were released on $120 bond.
Kirkpatrick came to Alabama as a five-star recruit in 2009 and landed on multiple All-America teams in 2011 as one of the anchors of a first-rate secondary that led the nation in both pass and pass efficiency defense. He's widely projected to go among the top 10 picks in April, as the first or (more likely) second cornerback off the board behind LSU's Morris Claiborne. Again, that's not likely to change because of a first-time pot arrest ?he had no known legal or disciplinary issues in three years in Tuscaloosa ?but he should probably go ahead and start boning up on his "I recognize my mistake" spiel for interviews at the combine.
