Recruiting season is in the home stretch, which means it's time for desperate coaches to break out the big guns in pursuit of the handful of sought-after prospects still sporting an "undecided" next to their name. This year, no prospect is more sought-after ? or more undecided ? than Springfield, Mo., wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham, unanimously regarded as the No. 1 recruit in the 2012 class. And within the scope of NCAA rules, there are few guns in any coach's arsenal bigger than the helicopter that dropped off Missouri coach Gary Pinkel today at Green-Beckham's high school.
No, smartass, it's not court-ordered: In fact, Pinkel's been taking out the chopper since at least 2009, as have a handful of other coaches ?Greg Schiano, James Franklin and (of course) Lane Kiffin among them ? who appreciate the mobility and the opportunity to make an entrance. For his part, Green-Beckham seemed to enjoy playing Magnum, P.I., in the cockpit, too, even though he probably has no idea what that means. When you can get up as high as he can for a jump ball, altitude kind of loses its novelty.
At any rate, the smile DGB is sporting in that photo is about as much information as we have on his eventual destination. He's expected to make a decision on signing day, Feb. 1, after taking his final official visit to Arkansas this weekend. (He took an official visit to Texas in November, and Oklahoma is reportedly in the mix, as well.) In the meantime, he should enjoy the last few days of millionaire control freaks pulling out the stops for his amusement. The opportunity doesn't last long, and it won't come again.
