Fashion Ump: Coco Crisp brings back the Afro in Oakland

Pass the pick, Oscar Gamble. Surrender the shampoo, Joe Sports Fan's logo.

Coco Crisp now has the baddest 'fro in baseball.

In a move that caused both teammates and baseball fans to frizz out with excitement, the Oakland Athletics outfielder took out his trademark braids on Thursday, silly, because his "head was itching." But what sprung up was something we've long waited for ? an Afro that rivaled the one belonging to Gamble, the 1970s outfielder who made the style an art form through his iconic baseball cards.

The best news is that unless he changed his mind after an 0-for-4 night in a 3-0 loss to the Detroit Tigers, Crisp plans on keeping the style for more than one game.

Yes, Coco's 'fro is here to be feared.

From the SF Chronicle:

Asked if he were planning to stick with his new 'do, Crisp said, "Yeah. I don't know what else to do with it. ... if I can get my shirt on."

Once he carefully pulled on his jersey and put his cap on ? same size as always, he said ? he ran onto the field for batting practice. To the amazement of teammates and managerBob Geren, who said, "A little retro there."

Crisp's retro look mixes well with the alternate gold uniforms that the A's have brought back for the 2011 season. And if it keeps the 'fro flowing, Oakland's mane man is putting himself in an excellent position for some endorsement money by the All-Star break.

Let's just hope the Topps photographers reach him for the 2012 set before it's too late.

Fashion Ump ruling: Locks for the Fashion Ump Hall of Fame

By the way, if you're wondering what ever became of Oscar Gamble: The New York Daily News reported in 2008 that he's living happily in Montgomery, Ala., and is involved with youth baseball ? but now sports a bald head.
