Mr. Holland?s mustache draws mixed reviews after Game 2 start

Yahoo! Dallas editor Jason Sickles checks in with an on-the-scene report ...

ARLINGTON, Texas ? Derek Holland is no Rollie Fingers.

The Texas Rangers pitcher freely admits as much, calling the shadow that rests on his upper lip, "the worst mustache in baseball."

"I hear it all the time," Holland said. "My friends started doing the mustache thing and I thought, why not? It'll take forever to grow it, and it'll look gross. But I'll have fun with it."

Holland's performance against the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday was almost as flimsy as his facial hair. The 24-year-old lefty led the AL in complete game shutouts during the regular season, but surrendered three runs in five innings on Saturday. That was still enough to earn the win in the Rangers' 8-6 victory, but not enough to overshadow the mustache that has become somewhat of aphenomenonin the Dallas-Ft. Worth area.

"Brian Wilson's beard in its first sonogram," one radio host called it.

"The Dutchstache" even has a Twitter account celebrating Holland's peach fuzz. It, of course, weighed in after pitching coach Mike Maddux ? famous for sporting a similar 'stache ? had a mound meeting with Holland and succeeded in calming him down.

"Derek's getting his groove back. I just had a Stache-to-Stache convo with Mike Maddux's stache. We talked dinner mostly..."

A few Rangers fans at Saturday's game sported their own fake 'staches to help Holland's cause.

"He's adorable," cooed Amber Cannon (right photo, left). "It looks like a chocolate milk mustache but we still love him."

Luisana Sanchez carried a sign reading, "Marry Me, Stache!"

"He's so sexy," Sanchez said.

We'll have to take her word for it.
